The African Elephants we care for each eat about 175 - 220 lbs of food per day! Their regular diet consists of grass, fruit, vegetables as well as daily treats of rice products and balanced mineral supplements to closely match a natural, balanced diet. The animals are constantly monitored by wildlife vets and nutritionists to ensure optimal health and identify potential health issues. All animals have full time access to fresh, clean water of which they can each consume more than 50 gallons per day! Keeping the animals fed and healthy is a full time job that keep our volunteers and team members very busy. Your donation will directly contribute to the huge daily expense to feed these giants.
Poachers set snares targeting specific animals. Snares are often left behind after poachers leave an area and will continue to trap and kill animals for many more years. Small, thin, single strand wire snares are set lower to the ground to catch small antelope, while larger, thicker snares with multiple strands of wire are set higher along to trap bigger animals. Animals panic when they are caught in the snare and will continue to pull at the wire making it tighter and tighter. If the snare is around their neck and the wire is strong enough, the animal will suffocate. Rangers in the protected areas work very hard to remove snares set by poachers. Sometimes they remove dozens of snares a day or even at one location.
We support multiple Rhino sanctuaries and orphanages. The care provided to these orphaned and injured baby rhinos has the singular aim of releasing them back into the wild. Many of these places and their employees are under constant threat from poachers as well as financial hardship. Financial contributions and volunteers are their life blood. We are committed to provide constant, sustainable support to this very important cause.
Anti-poaching Rangers are the first line of defense against poachers and wildlife smugglers. These team members operate in small groups in extremely harsh circumstances while they are sometimes away from their families for weeks or even months at a time. We currently support 3 ranger programs in South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in violence against rangers and their families due to the heightened levels of violence used by the poachers and the crime syndicates that control them. Ranger programs are extremely expensive to operate and takes a huge toll on these dedicated individuals.
Many elephant calves are orphaned through poaching as well as through natural causes. We spend huge amounts of resources to ensure that these little ones have the best chance of survival. The ultimate goal is releasing these orphans back into a protected area where they can freely roam and integrate into existing herds. We are currently supporting multiple orphans in various stages of maturity and on the path to reintegration.

Drones have become an invaluable tool in protecting wildlife in high risk areas. Drones are the least invasive way of gathering herd data, identifying potential threats and acting as a deterrent to poachers and wildlife smugglers. Our drone program has proven to be extremely successful in combating wildlife crime in remote areas with limited vehicle access.
